Tips for Extending the Life of Your Furnace

Tips for Extending the Life of Your Furnace

The difference between a properly cared-for furnace and one used and abused without any thought for its condition is night and day. If you don’t care too much about letting your furnace last forever, because you plan an upgrade or have a powerful warranty, remember that the efficiency, efficacy, and lifespan of a furnace are intricately linked; anything that improves one will improve the other. So follow these five tips, and make the most of your heating system!

1) React to little problems quickly

Perhaps the simplest thing you can do to extend the life of your furnace is be attentive; when you notice trouble, do something about it. Don’t ignore that weird noise, that strange hesitance to turn on, that inconsistent heat. Little problems in a system become big problems in the system — do yourself a favor and get eyes on your furnace quickly when necessary.

2) Find out how regularly your system should be maintained, and stick to that schedule

Different systems require different amounts of scheduled maintenance; find out what yours looks like, and stick with it. You might be able to do part of the work yourself, if you’re a savvy DIYer, but there will inevitably be parts which demand a professional – don’t ruin your system trying to guess your way through.

3) Keep the area around your furnace clear of clutter, dust and debris

Mess around your furnace is simply asking for something to go wrong: for something to fall over and damage the exterior, for something to block intake and let the unit burn itself up, or for dust to creep in and work its malign magic on everything. Keep your furnace and its proximity clean, and it’s going to live longer, guaranteed.

4) Swap filters as regularly as the manufacturer recommends

Dust destroys furnaces. Poor air flow destroys furnaces. You’ll have both of these problems if you have filthy filters sitting in your unit for months or years, so swap them as recommended.

5) Minimize run time by weatherproofing your home

You want to be heating your home, not heating Albuquerque. Any machine that runs wears at itself; the less you need from your furnace, the longer it will serve you adequately without the need for replacement.
