Ways to Reduce the Work of Your Air Conditioner

Ways to Reduce the Work of Your Air Conditioner

Albuquerque summers are usually hot and dry, and during these months your air conditioner works overtime. Instead of worrying about electric and repair bills, take a few measures to help your air conditioning work more efficiently by noting these tips to helping it work more efficiently.

Ceiling fans

This is one of the best ways to help circulate cool air. Ceiling fans can lower the temperature in a room by as much as seven degrees, making sure your air conditioner is turned on a lot less. You know what that means – less money!

Install a house fan for ventilation

The sun heats your roof, and this heat then penetrates the inside of your house. Normally placed in attics, house fans pull stale, warm air from inside your house and replace it with fresh air.

Make sure your AC unit is the correct size for your house

If your AC is too small for your home, it will not operate smoothly, keeping your house warm and wasting you money. An incorrectly sized unit is also more prone to breakdowns, so call a technician to evaluate if you have the appropriate air conditioner for your home.

Keep it clean

Change the AC filters regularly; about once a month will suffice. When dirt clogs the filters, the unit works harder and less efficiently. Make sure weeds and other debris are not covering an outside unit. Leave a couple of feet clear around it. If you have an outdoor AC unit, vent your clothes dryer at least 10 feet away from the unit to keep it lint-free.

Take care of your duct-work

Insulate your ducts with foil-faced Ro8-rated fiberglass insulation. Call a professional to clean your duct-work every couple of years. If a part of your home is always too warm, you may have a blockage in your duct-work.

Avoid producing excess heat

Wait until the cool, late evening to run your dishwasher, oven, or clothes dryer. Block the sun on the west or south facing part of the house with curtains or blinds. If you don’t want to lose your view, use solar shade screens.

Keep your air registers clean and accessible

Vacuum the registers when you normally clean the house to keep dust from blocking them. Move any curtains, furniture or other items covering your registers.

These are some of the ways you can care for your AC to make sure it runs at optimal efficiency.
